EDF (Data Science & Market Analytics)_2018 Engineer Intern Needs

EDF-5 – Market Study on Data Science for Energy

Internship Description:

Data science is in growing prosperity with gradual maturity of related techniques (big data, artificial intelligences…), which have been changing human beings’ behaviors and livelihood, as well as starting to penetrate quantities of industrial fields and lead to disruptive innovations and industry upgrading. Energy is a traditional sector but will never be out of time, and people are always trying to seek alternative energy solutions and improve utilization efficiency to make us head towards a better life with limited resources. Integration of data science into energy technologies release a space to optimize today’s energy industry, or even possibly impact human beings’ energy use behavior.

This internship aims at carrying out a detailed market study on data science development in China’s energy industry and power engineering, including present market situation, policy drivers, stakeholders, business models, application fields, future projection and etc.

Roles & Responsibilities:

1. Review the development states of big data and AI in China’s energy industry and power engineering;

2. Identify related policy drivers, incentives and stakeholders in China;

3. Analyze the applications of big data technologies in electric power system;

4. Study the utilization of AI technologies and approaches in smart energy management, in particular for building energy use;

5. Assess different technologies and project future evolutions.

Requirements:

1. Master candidate in engineering or business schools (knowledge on energy, environment, economics or marketing is a priority);

2. Strong ability on information collection and filtration;

3. Capabilities on data gathering and analytics with adequate tools (Excel, R, Python…);

4. Chinese and English;

5. 6 months ASAP, Beijing.

Remuneration: 275 RMB/Day.

EDF-6 – Electricity Market Quantitative Analysis and Electricity Price Forecasting

Internship Description:

China electric power system is undergoing reform and electricity market deregulation is in gradual progress in terms of different provincial situations, in particular, with the coming of provincial spot markets, energy portfolio management and power trading are becoming attractive business to all market participants including GenCos, GridCos, independent retailors… Nevertheless, accompanied with market liberalization, the electricity price volatility and market coupling with other energy commodities will simultaneously bring more uncertainty and risks for the stakeholders. This makes market quantitative analysis and price forecasting essential for all power traders and energy investors.

EDF R&D accumulates a set of competences and numerical tools in quantitative analysis and price forecasting for electricity and fuel commodity (gas and coal) based on different time horizon (long-term, medium-term, short-term), through modeling and simulations (market fundamental models and statistic models), and presently R&D China Center needs to valorize EDF’s know-how in China by adapting Chinese (provincial) market mechanism and situations, developing local competences on electricity and energy market quantitative analysis and supporting EDF’s business (energy investment, asset management, consulting services…) in China.

Roles & Responsibilities:

1. Electricity market fundamental modeling with adapting to market situation and regulations of target provinces (mid-long term economic models, short term statistic models…);

2. Gathering market information and data, and building local power system database;

3. Electricity price forecasting, mid-long term energy investment strategy-making, short term tactical asset allocation;

4. Electricity market coupling with coal and gas market.

Requirements:

1. Master candidate in applied mathematics, economics, computing science, energy, power…;

2. Strong capabilities on python programming and modeling;

3. Interesting in quantitative analysis, data analytics and decision-making;

4. 6 Months ASAP, Beijing

Remuneration: 275 RMB/Day.
