Intercultral Module|Senior Product Director of Ping An Asset Management Invited to Deliver Online Lecture for SPEIT Intercultural Module Series

As COVID-19 rages across the world, SPEIT has remained consistent in offering online classes for its students in cooperation with its partners from the academic and business communities. On the afternoon of April 29th 2020, Mr. ZHU Jia, senior product director of Ping An Asset Management Co. Ltd, delivered a fantastic and productive online lecture as part of the intercultural module series, themed “Fintech Application in Investment: its history, evolution, status quo, and the future”, as one of the signature courses as part of the school-business cooperation of SPEIT.

By raising the question - “Will fintech as an industry disruptor eventually replace mankind?”, Mr. ZHU introduced the history and evolution of fintech application in investment, and answered this grim and realistic question based on a few real-life cases that had once triggered huge turmoil in the financial market - the flash crash of the stock and foreign exchange markets as a result of the high frequency trading used in the high-speed computer-based algorithmic trading on May 6th 2010.

He believed that science and technology enabled mankind to make advances while fintech brought about rapid changes. As he said in the lecture, fintech has three eras. In the era of fintech 1.0, paper was replaced with digitalization. In the era of fintech 2.0, interconnectivity made it possible to make analysis anytime anywhere. And in the era of fintech 3.0, the one where we are living, the key ABCD technologies, namely AI, Block Chain, Cloud Computing, and Big Data, enables us to compute faster, view more, and judge things more accurately. Science and technology, he said, is still evolving. Looking ahead, he believed the captivating era of fintech 4.0 might be in the offing.

In the Q&A part, Mr. ZHU discussed fintech and techfin with the students via three open-ended questions in a way that provoked their thoughts: the merits and demerits of Internet fintech giants in comparison with traditional financial businesses, the fundamental relations between AI and human intelligence in the future, and the vague boundaries of traditional sellers and buyers as well as market service agencies in the financial industry. As he pointed out, how to position ourselves and develop the ability to self-iterate in learning in this tech-driven era of constant industrial reconstruction was worth mulling over.

After the lecture ended, the students said that they learnt many concepts and gained a deeper understanding of the fintech industry thanks to Mr. ZHU’s detailed and vivid description. Science and technology can be seen everywhere, and it’s very necessary for students majoring in engineering to have some financial knowledge. And the students also voiced their desire to know something more, such as the impact of online payment on currency, the development trend of the fintech industry in the next decade and the challenges thereof, the possibility of jumping from the engineering to the financial industry, and the job market in the financial industry. So let’s look forward to having more wonderful lectures!

As a signature course series for SPEIT’s school-business cooperation, the intercultural module series is aimed at enabling its students to have an understanding of the latest developments across all sectors by offering them lectures to attend and opportunities to visit companies so that they can be better guided as they choose majors and set career goals. The initially arranged visits to many outstanding companies have all been unfortunately suspended thanks to the pandemic that broke out early this year, but SPEIT has filled the vacuum by organizing a series of excellent lectures, so that the students can keep updated on the latest developments and trends of cutting-edge technologies and all sectors, broaden their visions, and enrich their knowledge pool by simply staying at home.
