Intercultural Module| SET Chairman Mr. NI Jingang Invited to Deliver Lecture for SPEIT
On the afternoon of September 30th 2020, Chairman and Chief Designer of Sino-Engine Technologies Co., Ltd (SET) and Professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Mr. NI Jingang was invited to deliver a lecture themed “Design, Research, and Development of Aircraft Engines in China” to the third-year students of SPEIT for its intercultural module.
The lecture focused upon four topics: the importance of the aircraft engine industry, key technologies for the design and research and development (R&D) of aircraft engines, the aircraft engine industry in China, and SET’s aircraft engine projects.
As is known to all, aircraft engine is like the heart of an aircraft that reflects the industrial foundation, comprehensive national strength, and science and technology of a country. China has been chasing after the developed and industrialized countries in the West in science and technology, but unfortunately, Mr. NI said, we still lag far behind the West in aircraft engines and microchips. In particular for aircraft engines, it’s impossible to have the technology through technology acquisition, imitation, or plagiarism, which could be obtained only by self-reliance and hard work.
The design and R&D of aircraft engines involve many basic subjects, such as new materials, process, computational analysis procedure and software, and basic combustion theory. Their application requires engineering applications, manufacturing, and quality monitoring, while their development is closely related with system design, testing, trial trip for evidence, and after-sales service. As their operations are thermodynamic-mechanical behaviors in extreme circumstances, an exceedingly high level of reliability and safety has to be ensured, which poses a grave challenge to basic subjects and cutting-edge technologies. It would take at least 10 to 20 years to have a successful R&D for a project even in a developed country, and 20 to 50 years on average for the whole lifecycle of the project, which means China still has a long way to go in this regard.
Then Mr. NI gave an overview of the aircraft engine industry in China, analyzing the technology features of the aircrafts currently under development such as the ARJ21 regional jet, the C919 narrow-body airliner, and the CR929 wide-body airliner. A horizontal and vertical comparison between Boeing and Airbus aircrafts offered students a more intuitive and comprehensive understanding of the latest developments in this field.
Mr. NI concluded his lecture by giving a brief introduction to some of the ongoing aircraft engine projects at SET. As the only private company specializing in forward R&D of aircraft engines in China, SET has a strong team of ambitious aircraft researchers who have been relentlessly working for China’s private aircraft engines. By talking about his own learning and working experience, Mr. NI inspired the future engineers of SPEIT to cherish their precious time in college, work hard at basic subjects, and join his team after graduation, in a bid to contribute their shares to the great cause of the Chinese nation in the aviation field!
