Professor Yves Brechet, Academician of the French Academy of Sciences, Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Supreme Scientific Adviser of the French Atomic Energy Agency, Visits SJTU
From May 7 to May 11, 2018, upon invitation of Zhong Shengyi, Associate Professor of SPEIT, Yves Brechet, Academician of the French Academy of Sciences, Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Supreme Scientific Adviser of the French Atomic Energy Agency, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (“SJTU”), gave a lecture on the No.102 Master Forum, attended the academic development workshop, and visited the China Institute of Atomic Energy and Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics, etc.
Professor Yves Brechet was born in 1961. He graduated with a master's degree from École Polytechnique. He obtained doctor’s diploma and professor qualification from Le Groupe Grenoble INP. He is now an academician of the French Academy of Sciences and Academician of the European Academy of Sciences. Starting from 2012, he has been the highest commissioner of the French Atomic Energy Agency and the highest governmental scientific adviser in the field of atomic energy in France. His major fields of study are metallurgy and mechanical calculation of materials. His research fields include solid phase transition, plastic deformation and fatigue fracture of materials. In recent years he has also studied biomaterials. Professor Yves Brechet published more than 500 papers on SCI, and the papers were quoted more than 24000 times. He guided 78 doctors, and won the silver prize of French National Academy of Sciences in 2009 and won the prize of “Gay-Lussac” in 2011.
Attending the No.102 Master Forum
On May 7, Professor Yves Brechet gave a brilliant presentation titled “Sustainable nuclear energy in the Climate change context and related materials science issues” to the faculty members and students of SJTU in the 8th floor lecture hall in the Information Technology Center.
Through the lecture, Academician Yves Brechet first analyzed the causes of current global warming and pointed out that the current global carbon dioxide emissions were most obvious in Africa, followed by Asia. According to Yves Brechet, countries such as India, China and the United States were the biggest emitters of carbon dioxide, while the emission of carbon dioxide in most European countries and regions was relatively low. Then, Mr. Brechet explained the concept of energy mix. Energy mix has a variety of ways. For example, electricity, nuclear power, clean coal energy, tidal energy, wind energy and others can be mixed. He pointed out that nuclear power had advantages that many other energy sources cannot compete with, such as being safe, economic and durable, but current use of nuclear energy is very little worldwide and has not aroused interests to a worldwide extent. Mr. Brechet took France's nuclear power processing as an example and made a brief introduction of the process of nuclear power production.
During the interaction, the students communicated with Academician Brechet about the issues they cared about. Everyone was enthusiastic and talked about his/her own questions and doubts. Mr. Brechet patiently answered them. Through the presentation, the audiences had a basic understanding of the status quo of the world energy use and the challenges faced, and showed deep admiration to the insights of Mr. Brechet and his steadfast attitude and diligence.
SPEIT and School of Materials Science & Engineering Jointly Hosts the Sino-French Technology Academic Development Workshop of 2018
To promote the exchange and cooperation between SJTU and French universities and scientific research institutions in higher education and researches, by taking the opportunity of the visit of Professor Yves Brechet, SPEIT and School of Materials Science & Engineering co-hosted the Sino-French Technology Academic Development Workshop of 2018 of SJTU. Joaquim NASSAR, French Dean, was present at the workshop. Altogether eight professors from China and France attended the workshop. At the workshop, the professors respectively introduced the research progresses of their respective fields, and fully introduced potential cooperation projects.
Later, under the coordination of Zhong Shengyi, Associate Professor of mechanical engineering of SPEIT, Professor Yves Brechet visited the China Atomic Energy Research Institute and the China Academy of Engineering Physics, and discussed about the cooperation of atomic energy research center in SJTU.
Through the academic workshop, SPEIT, as a platform, has further expanded the field of scientific research cooperation between China and France, and the spillover effects of Sino-French cooperation in running schools have been further revealed.
