On the afternoon of June 10th 2020, the 17th joint institutional board meeting of SPEIT was held simultaneously in Shanghai and Paris. The meeting was attended by Party Secretary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Mr. YANG Zhenbin, President and Deputy Party Secretary of SJTU Mr. LIN Zhongqin, Vice President of SJTU Mr. HUANG Zhen, and member of the standing committee of SJTU’s Party committee and Vice President of SJTU Ms. XU Xuemin at SJTU Minhang Campus, as well as President of ENSTA Paris Ms. Elisabeth CREPON, Chairman of the Board of Ecole Polytechnique and Institut Polytechnique de Paris Mr. Eric LABAYE, President of MINES ParisTech Mr. Vincent LAFLECHE, and President of Télécom Paris Mr. Nicolas GLADY in Paris. Mr. Phillipe Bigot from Safran Group also attended the meeting via video link. The meeting was chaired by Mr. LIN Zhongqin.

Mr. YANG Zhenbin was welcomed as a new member of the Chinese leadership on the joint institutional board of SPEIT. Chinese Dean of SPEIT Mr. LI Shaoyuan, French Dean of SPEIT Mr. Frédéric TOUMAZET, Secretary of Party General Branch of SPEIT, and Vice Dean of SPEIT Mr. LIU Zenglu briefed on the developments following the last joint institutional board meeting, especially in online teaching, the employment of the class of 2020, academic development system reform, school-business cooperation, admissions, budget management, and staff recruitment.

In the first half of the 2020 academic term, SJTU has worked together with its French partner schools and businesses to keep SPEIT running steadily and efficiently despite the global COVID-19 pandemic: online teaching has been proceeding smoothly; the class of 2020 master’s graduates fared well in finding jobs; and our business partners continued to offer internship and work opportunities to SPEIT’s students during the pandemic. The first winter camp in France in 2020 was successfully delivered, where students had much in-depth exchange. And SPEIT and SJTU Graduate School jointly organized the online 2020 Shanghai International Summer School of Engineering Postgraduates in Shanghai in July, for which over 250 students from China, France, Morocco, and the US had registered.

The proposal of the academic programme reform and the budget for 2020 were reviewed and passed at the meeting. Mr. LIN shared with his French counterparts SJTU’s experience in online teaching, and proposed to allow both sides to share high-quality teaching resources via online channels in the future. The two sides exchanged ideas on further implementing the seed fund agreement and enhancing scientific research cooperation and agreed on joint push for collaboration. And in-depth discussions were made at the meeting as to how to minimize the impact posed by the pandemic on the teaching and curriculum for the second half of the academic term amid uncertainties over the evolution of the pandemic.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. YANG Zhenbin lauded French engineering education as the cradle of the country’s elites with great achievements in international engineering education, and stressed the key role that a full-fledged and well-functioning joint institutional board would play in pushing the Chinese and French efforts to develop excellent engineers. Citing a Chinese idiom in fluent French - “Vouloir, c’est pouvoir” (Where there is a will, there is a way), he expressed his confidence in greater development of SPEIT with such strong momentum for cooperation between the two sides that he believed would remain unchanged in both determination and pace in regards to bilateral cooperation despite multiple changes and difficulties in the international situations as a result of the pandemic.

In her speech, Ms. Elisabeth CREPON thanked several times SJTU, its business partners, and all the faculty members for their unrelenting efforts and achievements, deemed the meeting very constructive that she believed would certainly drive the two sides towards more in-depth and effective cooperation in a wide range of areas such as online teaching, scientific research, and the seed fund, and expressed her hope to see a recovery from the pandemic and work for reopening school.
