On the afternoon of September 23rd,2020, SPEIT invited Professor XI Tao from the School of Media & Design of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), the designer of the logo marking the 120th anniversary of the founding of SJTU, to deliver a lecture, titled “Cultural Confidence and Innovative Design in Traditional Craftsmanship” to the third-year students of SPEIT, for its intercultural module.

With a focus on four topics – cultural and artistic attributes of traditional industries, brand values of industrial products, environmental protection in traditional industries, and service experiences of industrial products, Mr. XI introduced seven key concepts: images (schema & pattern), characters (symbol & word), wares (item & treasure), arts (art & sect), quality (pragmatism & eco-friendliness), and feelings (experience & sentiment).

The world entered the age of industrial design after the industrial revolution emerged. And with the handicraftsman revolution, traditional industrial design was undergoing consistent transformation. Designers from all walks of life contributed their wisdom and creation to embedding the ideas of their respective nations in every product they made, which not only carried forward various cultures but propelled industries to develop. China’s traditional craftsmanship features a unique way of thinking that seeks to balance the relations between the heaven, the earth, and the people. Professor XI presented a large array of excellent works with numerous exquisite images, including those by designers CHEN Youjian, JIN Daiqiang, and WEI Zheng, and explicated the cultures, meanings, and creations associated with them from his unique perspective. Innovation, he pointed out, is everywhere, which drives the design community together with science and technology with the start in artistic design to reach human factors design, commercial design, technical design, and social design, as well as great strides towards 5G design.

Professor XI closed his lecture by expressing his hope to see the prospective engineers at SPEIT carrying forward cultures and using better engineering design to create even better lives with Picasso’s philosophy of art - Art is a lie, but the lie can educate us to get to know the truth.

As a signature course series for SPEIT’s school-business cooperation, Intercultrual Module is aimed at enabling its students to have an understanding of the latest developments across all sectors by offering them lectures to attend and opportunities to visit companies so that they can be better guided as they choose majors and set career goals. The initially arranged visits to many outstanding companies have all been unfortunately suspended thanks to the pandemic that broke out early this year, but SPEIT has filled the vacuum by organizing a series of excellent lectures, so that the students can keep updated on the latest developments and trends of cutting-edge technologies and all sectors, broaden their visions, and enrich their knowledge pool by simply staying at home.
