Since middle school, Zeng Hongchuan has loved participating in Model United Nations activities, and joining an international organization has always been his dream. At the Shanghai Jiao Tong Model United Nations conference, he won the Best Delegate award and was invited to join the Model United Nations Association. From his second year of undergraduate studies, Zeng Hongchuan persistently sent resumes to international organizations. Finally, he stood out among more than three thousand candidates to secure an internship in data science at the OECD. His proficiency in English and French, combined with his science and engineering background, and his rich international experience gave him a significant advantage during the selection process.
Applying Knowledge to Drive Urbanization Policies in Africa
In the Secretariat of the Sahel and West Africa Club at the OECD, Zeng Hongchuan is responsible for producing and maintaining a database containing geographical and population information of African settlements, used for mapping and analyzing the urbanization of African countries.
During his internship, he innovatively designed an algorithm based on computer vision and graph theory, using satellite images to identify the boundaries of settlements. This method not only improved the accuracy of identification but also eliminated the need for manual annotation. With the database he maintained, policy researchers could better understand the development status of African settlements, enabling them to formulate more targeted policies and plan future urbanization processes.
