Yijia Yuan graduated from the University of Rouen in France in 2012 with a bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. In 2012, Yuan Yijia completed her doctoral studies at the University of Rouen in France and embarked on the road back to China. She was eager to find a job that was both engineering and related to France, and lived up to her seven years of experience in France. Opportunities always come unexpectedly, favoring those who are prepared. In this year, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and four top engineering colleges in France jointly established the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Paris Hi-Tech Excellence Engineering Institute (renamed "Shanghai Jiao Tong University Paris Excellence Engineering College" in 2021), introduced the France engineering education system, and is recruiting mathematics and science teachers who can teach in French. "When I entered the college, Aristide CAVAILLÈS, the coordinator of the Physics and Chemistry group at that time, was sent by the Ministry of National Education of France, and he has rich teaching experience and rigorous teaching, and now he is the Inspector General of Physics and Chemistry of the Ministry of Education of France. I listened to his lectures from beginning to end, including Cours Magistruux (CM), Travaux Pratiques (TP), and Travaux Dirigés (TD). The preparatory department in France pays special attention to the teaching of mathematics and science, in the thinking of France, mathematics and science are the underlying logic of engineering, and they must understand the underlying principles and then carry out engineering innovation. Referring to the education of engineers in France, the mathematics and science courses of the college are divided into three parts: large courses, exercises and experimental courses. The large class system is large, and the teacher teaches theoretical knowledge to more than 100 students in the large classroom; In the exercise class, there are generally about 20 students, and the teacher explains the exercises, trains and examines the students' knowledge application ability; Lab classes are conducted in the laboratory. Yijia introduced, "The teaching in the basic stage is gradual, and the teachers hope to help students lay a solid foundation of theory and ability. In addition to large courses, exercise courses, and laboratory courses, the college also adopts a continuous assessment system including oral examinations (Colle) and stage tests to grasp students' learning situation in a timely and comprehensive manner. ”

Will there be adaptability problems when France engineer education is transplanted to China? After several rounds of lectures and lectures, Yijia has accumulated teaching experience and gradually has her own thinking. Yijia believes that "while we learn from France engineer education, we also need to fully consider the needs of students and national conditions to form engineering education with Chinese characteristics." In recent years, on the basis of the original teaching, we have continued to integrate and innovate, and paid more attention to the cultivation of students' comprehensive engineering ability while imparting subject knowledge. ”

In the process of teaching, Yijia and her colleagues constantly observe the adaptation and ability needs of Chinese students, and optimize the curriculum and teaching design.

 

Yijia believes that our current teaching has two characteristics: one is interdisciplinary collaborative teaching. For example, in the basic stage, we work with teachers at the engineer stage to teach. More and more professional education is integrated in the foundation stage, so that students can feel the value and fun of learning mathematics and physics; The French group and the mathematics and physics group are linked to integrate professional vocabulary into the French teaching in the freshman year to help students overcome the language barrier as soon as possible. The physics group, the mathematics group, and professional teachers are linked to set up basic mathematics and physics practice projects. The second is to pay attention to classroom interaction. For example, in the recent physics and chemistry class, students were asked to throw table tennis balls to simulate Rutherford α particle scattering experiments, and to play "Escape Room" with the theme of "The Three-Body Problem" to review the knowledge of "Introduction to the Structure of Matter", and the students were very excited and participated.

Teaching French has always been intimidating to many students, but French is one of the most rigorous languages in the world, a culture, a way of thinking.

 

"In the freshman classroom, I often spend a certain amount of time to provide psychological counseling to my classmates. Learning mathematics in a new language can be challenging, and students are faced with a huge shift in teaching and learning. Speaking of which, Yijia talked about her study experience in France, because this experience made her especially able to "empathize" with students.

 

"My study in France can be summed up in one word, 'bitter', but looking back, it was my perseverance that gave me the opportunity to enter the academy and 'fight side by side' with the loveliest and best future 'Zhuogong'. When I first arrived in France in 2005, smartphones, tablets, and recording devices were not as common as they are now, and I went through the process of going from 'intelligible' and 'incomprehensible' to 'first in grade'. Although I had studied French before going abroad, when it came to class, it was still like listening to a 'book from heaven'. At that time, there were very few Chinese students, and the students in the class were mainly France, and the teacher's board book 'Dragon Flying Phoenix Dance' was also fast. In class, I could only copy notes according to the gourd drawing, and after returning to the dormitory, I checked against the machine, and even guessed with Meng, and pieced together the teacher's classroom 'book of heaven'. In this way, little by little to overcome and little by little to progress. Yijia will encourage students with this "painful" experience, and at the same time use patient, meticulous and exquisite teaching to help students adapt as soon as possible.

 

In terms of teaching, Yijia believes that listening to lectures and theoretical learning are very important. "I have listened to all the foreign teachers in our group, and some of them have been taught twice. Even if it is the same course, each teacher's thinking and explanation are different, which can give me new ideas and inspiration. In this way, I can know how to explain a knowledge point, and it is easier for students to understand. I have also listened to the lessons of the Chinese teachers. I learned different things from each teacher, and I learned a lot. In addition, it is also important to learn educational theories, so that you can carry out teaching research scientifically and effectively, and use theories to guide and improve your own teaching. I have also benefited a lot from the various teaching seminars organized by the school and college. ”

In 2023, the project "Practice and Exploration of a New Model of Engineering Basic Education Oriented by Improving Students' Comprehensive Ability" led by Yuan Yijia won the special prize of teaching achievements of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; As the editor-in-chief, he wrote a series of physical chemistry textbooks of "Sino-French Outstanding Engineer Training Project", which is now being published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press, and has published 6 volumes including "Classical Mechanics (French Edition)" in the past three years, with a total of 10 volumes published so far, and is expected to publish another 6 volumes. This series of teaching materials is the first set of French teaching materials in the field of engineering education in China, which not only fills the gap of Sino-French cooperation teaching materials in China, but also applies and promotes the teaching experience of the college's engineering mathematics and general education and the important achievements of the sinicization of engineering education in France.

In addition, since 2016, Yijia has presided over the completion of 6 projects and 1 Shanghai Jiao Tong University Teaching Development Fund, participated in the completion of the 2020 Shanghai University Undergraduate Key Education Reform Project (ranked 3), and completed the 2023 Teaching Designer Cultivation Project of the Teaching Development Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University with excellent results, and obtained the Teaching Designer Qualification Certificate.

 

As the course leader, "University Basic Physics" was rated as a first-class undergraduate course of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2020, and the project was approved as a municipal key course in Shanghai universities in 2022 and a cultivation project of ideological and political teacher courses in undergraduate courses of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2023。 As a team member, the course "Liquid Phase Physical Chemistry" was also rated as a first-class undergraduate course at the university level of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2023. He has published 9 articles in core journals such as Chinese University Teaching as the first or corresponding author, and 4 articles as a co-author.
