To fully understand the adaptation to learning and living conditions of first-year students, the SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology held a symposium for representatives of the class of 2024 freshmen on October 10th at noon. Chen Zhe, Deputy Director of the Student Affairs Office, Deputy Minister of the Party Committee Organization Department, and Director of the Employment Center, Yao Xue, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute, Professor Zhong Shengyi, Deputy Dean and Coordinator of the Mechanical Engineering Program, Associate Professor Wei Guanghua, Coordinator of the Energy and Power Program and Director of the Student Scientific Research and Innovation Center, Associate Professor Ji Hongjun, Coordinator of the Mathematics and Computer Group, Associate Professor Yuan Yijia, Coordinator of the Physics and Chemistry Group, teachers from the Academic Affairs Office, Student Affairs Office, and Admissions and Publicity Office, as well as 16 representatives of first-year students and 3 representatives of senior students attended. The symposium was chaired by Deputy Secretary Yao Xue.
At the beginning of the meeting, Deputy Secretary Yao Xue asked in a cordial manner about the students' adaptation over the nearly two months since their enrollment. Subsequently, 12 representatives of the freshmen opened up and shared their experiences in French and mathematical studies, collective life, scientific research projects, and club and class activities.
In response to the freshmen's anxiety and confusion about scientific research directions, scientific innovation competitions, and future career development, Teachers Zhong Shengyi and Wei Guanghua provided answers. Teacher Zhong used his own college career as an example, humorously comforting the students with "anxiety is a day, no anxiety is also a day," encouraging everyone to maintain an optimistic attitude, worry less, act more, actively participate in the PRP project, and explore fields of interest in practice. Teacher Wei emphasized from the perspective of information collection that students can obtain a list of scientific innovation competitions from the institute, understand various types of scientific innovation competitions in the school, and lock in the direction of interest. On this basis, it is even more important to learn to actively search for information, actively track the competition schedule, and actively join teams to participate in scientific innovation.

In response to the freshmen's confusion about academic pressure, student activities, and campus life, three senior students—Chu Yunyi from the class of 2021, Shan Yijia from the class of 2022, and Chen Shuang—generously shared their experiences. Shan Yijia serves as the chairman of the student union and stands out in scientific innovation and cultural and sports activities. She mentioned two keywords for college life—"try" and "explore." She encouraged the younger students present to break through self-imposed boundaries, dare to try new things, bravely join different organizations and clubs, communicate with different people, and continuously expand their horizons, thinking, and ability boundaries.
Finally, Deputy Director Chen Zhe encouraged the students of the Sino-French Institute from the perspective of the job market. He said that the three engineering majors of the Sino-French Institute are all popular majors in the market, and Sino-French students have the composite advantages of multilingual abilities and engineering backgrounds, which are unique in the national job market. The 6.5-year undergraduate and master's integrated training design of the institute gives students ample space for exploration. He also mentioned that cultivating excellent engineers is the current trend of the country, and students should engage in "theory-technology" application research from 1 to 10, continuously pursue excellence, improve themselves, and lay a solid foundation for the long-term development of their career.
The institute attaches great importance to the feedback and suggestions of every student and sincerely hopes that students will continue to maintain keen insight in their future study and life, actively discover and feedback problems, and actively seek communication and help. The institute will continue to optimize various services and management, strive to create a higher quality learning environment for students, and fully support every Elite Engineering student to grow strong on the platform of the SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology and realize personal value and dreams.
