Editor's Note

From the Huangpu River to the Seine River, from factories to the United Nations, the alumni of SPEIT have written different life trajectories in different parts of the world. In the series of “Engineers for Excellence in the Workplace”, we will invite alumni (current students) from different fields to tell their logic of career (internship) choices, cross-border experiences, and how to transform the advantages of Chinese and French biculturalism into core competitiveness.

In the first interview, alumnus Yu Li will bring his employment story.

1. Why did you choose to work in SMDERI? What was your process of job hunting ?

My story with SMDERI began with a company visit organized by SPEIT. At first, I just regarded it as a visit to register for the fall recruitment, but I didn't expect to be the only freshman in the team. Because of this, after the visit, I got an opportunity to communicate directly with the research supervisor. Because of the professional fit and ideal treatment, I seized the opportunity and set up an interview time with the personnel.

In July, after successfully passing the interview with the general manager, I received the offer. The whole process was efficient, which made me really feel the importance and respect of 711 for fresh graduates in related majors. As a result, I had successfully found a job before the official start of fall recruitment and was able to focus on my thesis and defense in the next six months.

What position are you currently working in? What is the work rhythm and status like?

I am currently working in the Compressor Division, engaged in structural design related work in compressor research and development. In my department, the whole team has a strong scientific research atmosphere, and we collaborate efficiently with each other with the working rhythm of “discussing anytime and going to the workshop at anytime”. This open and pragmatic environment is exactly my ideal working atmosphere.

The high degree of professional matching is also a key factor for me to choose this job. In my daily work, I frequently use mechanical drawing and simulation software, which involves the knowledge of thermodynamics, dynamics and mechanical design, etc., all of which I have built a solid foundation during my six and a half years of study at SPEIT. In addition, SMDERI's business involves a number of overseas markets, and as a graduate of SPEIT, my English and French language skills are put to good use.

What is the development prospect of this industry?

At the fall recruitment seminar that year, the director of SMDERI came to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in person and gave a two-hour speech to explain to the students why they should choose Shanghai to look for a job and why they should join China Shipbuilding. In addition to feeling the director's great expectations and sincere love for Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s students, I also deeply realized at that moment that it was the opportunity of the times.

China's industrial system, represented by the shipbuilding industry, is rapidly sweeping the global market and making steady progress toward the goal of a new era. Assessment data from international organizations show that as of 2024, the global market share of China's shipbuilding industry has exceeded that of all other countries combined, and the volume of ship and sea orders is even approaching 80% of the world.

And SMDERI is the core participant of this great change. We provide more energy-saving, environmentally friendly and efficient energy equipment for these ocean-going vessels and offshore platforms. In the future, we still need to promote industrial upgrading and expand the global market, with unlimited possibilities and huge development space.

What experience do you want to share with students at SPEIT about their career choices?

First of all, make preparations early. As we all know, our students are under great pressure in the last half of the year as they have to face three tasks at the same time: job hunting, engineer internship and graduation thesis. Therefore, it is a good choice to find the job early so as to leave time for the thesis and so on.

Second, dig deeper into the industry. Understand the industry information and get familiar with the industry. Participate in various forms of enterprise visits, use the network and even AI to understand deeply the industry.

Thirdly, catch the opportunities of practice. The engineer internship of SPEIT is an excellent opportunity to learn about the work, my internship was in a small company founded by a student graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University where there were only a few people and we did a lot of missions, both to understand the industry, but also to seize all kinds of opportunities for hands-on practice.

Last but not least, strategic vision. According to current laws, from the time we graduate to the time we retire, it's about 25 to 63 years old. The world will change a lot during these 38 long years of career. Therefore, it is not appropriate to look at career choices from today's perspective. It is necessary to cultivate strategic vision and analyze long-term future trends to grasp the right industry and choose the right company.

Finally, I wish you all the best in your job search and a bright future!
