On the evening of April 17, 2024, Shanghai Jiao Tong University welcomed a distinguished delegation from France's prestigious Corps des Mines. The 19-member delegation included 17 senior executives conducting in-depth research in China, accompanied by two prominent industry mentors: Mr. Florian BERGAMASCO, an executive from global energy leader TotalEnergies, and Mr. Patrice DUBOE, Executive Vice President of Innovation at Capgemini, the world-renowned consulting and digital services firm.
Corps des Mine
As the pinnacle of France's elite education system, the Corps des Mines is globally renowned for its rigorous selection process and exceptional training model. This prestigious institution exclusively recruits graduates from France's most eminent grandes écoles, including École Polytechnique, Mines Paris, and École Normale Supérieure. Through its unique "techno-political" interdisciplinary training program, it has produced generations of leaders who now occupy key positions across French government and industry. The visiting 2024 promotion, currently in their third year of training, represents France's future leadership. Upon completing their program in September 2025, these members will assume strategic roles in core government institutions such as the Ministry of Economy and Energy Regulatory Commission, where they will drive France's industrial transformation and sustainable development initiatives.

The exchange was carried out in a warm and open atmosphere, fostering deep and engaging discussions between both sides of students. Topics centered around each country’s achievements and challenges in digital transformation, the role of governments and other social actors in technological development, and how engineers can better participate in public decision-making. Discussions touched on a wide range of specific issues—for example, the adoption rates of electric vehicles in different countries, the relevant legal frameworks and public attitudes; the integration of artificial intelligence into judicial systems and its implications for public policy; and observations from company and factory visits during the French students' visit in China, which sparked lively conversations on working hours and labor models.
Another highlight of the exchange was the focus on cutting-edge large language models, such as DeepSeek and OpenAI. Students compared the two approaches, discussing the pros and cons of open-source versus closed-source models, the level of state involvement in algorithm governance, and how to strike a balance between technological innovation and ethical regulation. These discussions deepened participants’ understanding of the global dynamics of AI development and digital governance.
In addition, students shared their respective experiences in engineering education—such as the unique program of the Corps des Mines—as well as their thoughts on academic and career development, including whether to pursue a PhD, enter the research field, or move into industry. They also explored the practical applications of digital technologies in industrial contexts. The exchange was rich in thoughtful perspectives and sparked new ideas, fostering a deeper appreciation of the intersection between technology, education, and society.

This exchange has given us first-hand insight into China's achievements in digital transformation," said participant Victor DYSERYN. "SJTU students' innovative thinking and practical experience have left a profound impression on us.
"We warmly welcome Shanghai Jiao Tong University students to visit Capgemini's Applied Innovation Exchange," said Patrice Doublet. "This will be a great opportunity to explore innovation practices together and discover potential collaboration opportunities."
