01

Chasing Dreams, Finding His True Calling

Lin Nan exhibited talents in languages and mathematics from a young age. He frequently stood out and won awards in speech contests, while in the classroom, his mathematical aptitude kept him consistently at the top of his class. Because of this, he aspired to join the SJTU-Paris Institute as early as middle school. Carrying this dream, he worked diligently and ultimately stepped onto this land brimming with challenges and opportunities.

Upon entering university, he quickly adapted to the trilingual (Chinese, English, French) teaching pace. Not only did he master French in a short time, but under the guidance of kind, patient, and meticulous teachers, he gradually adapted to mathematics and science courses taught in French. Simultaneously, his childhood passion for code and command lines was reignited—the scrolling characters on the screen seemed alive, immersing him in the joy of constant building and debugging, unable to pull himself away.

He participated in the university's PRP and Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship projects. Under the careful guidance of his mentors and seniors, he gradually built the foundational knowledge of large language models, engaging in coding and paper reproduction. After completing related projects, he delved into the field of antennas and communication engineering to broaden his horizons. Under the strict requirements of his teachers, he systematically trained his abilities in paper analysis and research presentation.

Here, he also met like-minded friends. They competed in academic contests together, pulling all-nighters to ultimately achieve excellent results. After continuous exploration in the computer field, he finally found his strongest suit and joined the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Scalable Computing and Systems. Under the careful guidance of his supervisor and his own relentless efforts, he achieved a research breakthrough in his final undergraduate year, with multiple papers currently under review.

Lin Nan benefited greatly from the Linear Algebra course taught by Alain CHILLES, the institute's first Mathematics Coordinator, laying a solid mathematical foundation

A Constellation of Stars: "Happiness Shared is Happiness Doubled"

In art and campus cultural development, Lin Nan demonstrated exceptional artistic talent and organizational skills. Having studied violin and piano since childhood, he served as President of the SJTU Philharmonic Association, Vice President of the Rongchang Philharmonic Orchestra, and was also a violinist in the SJTU High-Level Art Troupe.

As early as elementary and middle school, he passed the highest level (Grade 10) in piano and obtained the top-level qualification for violin special talent. He trained in the Hangzhou Children's Symphony Orchestra. Requiring daily practice for hours, he had to interrupt his training and leave the stage during high school due to boarding requirements. When he picked up his violin again at the SJTU Rongchang Philharmonic Orchestra, playing the long-missed strings, it was as if he traveled through a time tunnel, seeing his former self shining brightly on stage.

Lin Nan, as Concertmaster of the Rongchang Chinese-Western Orchestra, leading the performance at the Sino-French Concert

During his undergraduate studies, he was consistently active in university-level, departmental-level, and even public performances. He organized and participated in numerous city, university, and institute-level instrumental concerts, including undergraduate and graduate commencement galas, university/institute welcome parties, New Year galas, SJTU Festival, Water Lantern Festival, as well as the ShanghaiTech University Lawn Music Festival and orchestra recitals. In December 2024, supported by the institute, he planned and successfully hosted the "Celebrating 60 Years of Sino-French Diplomatic Relations – Strings in Harmony, Music Blending China and France" concert, a tribute to the 60th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations.

Under his leadership, the SJTU Instrumental Exchange Association was selected as a "Five-Star Club." He and the members, through sustained artistic passion and selfless dedication, made active contributions to campus cultural development.

Lin Nan found his own study rhythm amidst a busy academic schedule while maintaining an optimistic and healthy lifestyle. He led his classmates to give their all, a group shining brilliantly on stage, radiating youthful splendor in beautiful music. As the saying goes, "Happiness shared is happiness doubled," and he believes this is the most beautiful form of youth!

Remembering the Source, Sowing Seeds of Dreams

Beyond his studies, Lin Nan never forgot his social responsibilities. In addition to his all-round development, he remembered his mission and remained true to his original aspiration, giving back to society promptly. Filled with love for the SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology, he was appointed as the Zhejiang Provincial Head of SJTU's "Return-to-Alma-Mater" Promotion Team and served as the "Global Engineer" Ambassador for the Paris Institute. He visited multiple key high schools to conduct specialized presentations, seminars, and admissions Q&A sessions, sharing learning experiences and growth stories with younger students, actively answering questions, spreading the spirit of SJTU and its Paris Institute, and sowing seeds of dreams.

Lin Nan (fourth from right) received a letter of appointment as the person in charge of promoting Zhejiang Province to students returning to Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

In the summer of 2023, Lin Nan participated in the “Global Excellence” summer program at the School of Business.

Now, Lin Nan is fully immersed in research on large model inference optimization and computer architecture optimization. Filled with passion for research and a strong interest in French culture, he is about to embark on a journey to ENSTA Paris to pursue his dual master's degree, beginning a new ascent in life.

Where the heart aspires, the steps follow. At SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology, Lin Nan found his brightest self!
