Under warm sunshine and a gentle breeze, French faculty and students from SPEIT visited Yucun Village in Anji, Zhejiang, on May 25–26, 2025. They attended the 2025 Dayucun Youth Rural Development Recruitment Conference and the launch ceremony of the Qingniao Initiative, immersing themselves in China’s vibrant rural revitalization amid lush countryside landscapes.
The group first became "digital villagers," learning about Yucun’s transformation through a guided tour. Once reliant on mining, the village suffered ecological damage. Over two decades of perseverance, it evolved from a polluted area into a model of sustainable development — achieving ecological beauty, industrial prosperity, and public wealth.
They then gathered before the stone monument engraved with "Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" for a group photo, capturing both the journey’s beginning and the cultural resonance between Chinese and French youth at this ecological civilization landmark.
As a hub of white tea production, Yucun offered the visitors hands-on experiences: plucking tea leaves in bamboo-forest plantations and mastering traditional tea-roasting techniques. Amid the aroma of fresh tea, they embraced the joy of labor and nature as "mountain tea harvesters."
Youth Power Ignites Rural Vitality
The Qingniao Initiative launch ceremony unfolded solemnly yet vibrantly against a mountain backdrop, painting a vision of "youth returning to build beautiful villages." The French delegation listened intently to introductions about rural revitalization strategies, learning how the initiative integrates policy support, platform development, and resource coordination to empower young talent.
They witnessed China’s countryside opening unprecedented opportunities for youth — blending idealism with practicality, passion with possibility — deepening their understanding of rural modernization’s unique appeal.
Post-ceremony activities included kite flying and a serene "Under-the-Tree Concert."
During the "Youth Talk" session, French students shared reflections on rural life, ecology, and the future, sparking cross-cultural dialogues.

"These contrast sharply with urban life. In France — especially Paris — cities dominate. Here, nature thrives, communities are intimate, and incubators empower youth entrepreneurship. Though France has similar programs, launching ventures amid such natural serenity feels like returning to the roots. It liberates young minds from urban noise and screens — an ideal creative environment."
C'est vraiment très différent de la civilisation qu'on a eu l'habitude de voir jusque là, donc c'était une bonne expérience. En France c'est très différent, on a beaucoup d'endroits urbanisés, surtout qu'on vient de Paris donc forcément y a des villes un peu partout, des trottoirs. Ici c'est un peu plus authentique, y a moins de monde, c'est plus petit, et on voit que y a des incubateurs pour donner la chance aux jeunes de créer leur startup et ça c'est super. En France y en a quelques uns aussi. Mais c'est vrai qu'ici le faire dans le cadre un peu naturel, c'est retour aux sources, et ça c'est super intéressant pour les jeunes. Pour qu'ils puissent un peu retourner dans un cadre naturel et authentique, et un peu décrocher de la ville, les réseaux sociaux, les écrans. Tout ça je trouve ça super et surtout pour faire une startup c'est encore plus sympa.

"Lyon has Alpine vistas, but nowhere have I seen entire communities mobilizing to support startups and youth like this. France’s initiatives are smaller-scale. China’s commitment here is truly inspiring."
C'est vrai que le paysage de montagnes comme ça, on en a un peu à côté de Lyon puisqu'on a les Alpes à côté, et c'est vraiment idyllique, le cadre est très très agréable. Mais des projets aussi grands qu'une ville entière dédiée aux startup, à faire grandir et venir les entreprises et les jeunes, c'est quelque chose que j'ai jamais vu. Ce qu'on retrouve en France c'est plutôt des choses un peu plus modestes un peu plus petites, qui fonctionnent très bien, qui suffisent je pense à donner l'opportunité à des jeunes et moins jeunes de se lancer dans leurs idées. J'ai du mal à savoir ce que j'en pense parce que ça m'impressionne plus qu'autre chose de voir à quel point la Chine investit dans ce genre d'endroits. C'est assez inspirant en vrai.

Amid emerald fields, SPEIT’s delegation harvested spring’s beauty, newfound friendships, and profound insights into sustainable rural futures. By witnessing ecological civilization in action and engaging local youth, they grasped the global significance of China’s rural revitalization.
Moving forward, SPEIT will expand such experiential programs to broaden students’ horizons, enhance cross-cultural skills, and inspire responsibility for sustainable development. As part of SPEIT’s "Buddy Program," this Yucun journey exemplifies how cultural exchange bridges international understanding and collaboration.
