  • Project Introduction

The “HyMind Power” team focuses on key applications in hydrogen energy and has successfully developed a mid-to-low temperature solid oxide fuel cell based on a novel proton-conducting material.

This technology breaks through the traditional dependence of fuel cells on high-temperature and high-humidity environments, achieving stable operation under dry conditions at 300–500°C.

With its “self-hydrogen-storage” capability, the system significantly reduces thermal management costs and minimizes humidity requirements. By integrating research resources from Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge, and combining AI-based high-throughput screening with neutron scattering and other advanced methods, the team has built a complete materials design–fabrication–validation chain.

The project has already received recognition and collaboration intentions from several companies, aiming to promote clean hydrogen energy solutions for applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and portable power systems.

Lead Supervisor: Cheng Junfang

Tenure-track Associate Professor at the SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology (SPEIT).

Dr. Cheng obtained her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. She previously served as a researcher at the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (WPI), Kyushu University, and as a lecturer at Waseda University.

She was also the first supervisor of a gold medal-winning team in the 2024 International College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.

The “HyMind Power” team is a joint collaboration between SPEIT and Imperial College London. The project won second place in the UK regional competition in June 2025 and advanced to the international grand final in October, where it triumphed with a Gold Medal, standing out among top global competitors.

This marks SPEITs second consecutive gold medal after its 2024 victory, highlighting the institute’s continued excellence in international innovation competitions and its growing brand influence in engineering education.

Looking forward, SPEIT will continue to gather global innovative talents, inspiring more young minds to “dare to explore and create,” and to write new chapters of innovation and engineering brilliance in the new era.
