Recently, the UNHCR official website featured an interview with SPEIT student Chen Yiyang on its homepage under the Spotlight: Hear from our interns section, where she appeared as one of the intern representatives.
During her internship at the Office of the Ombudsman and Mediator, Chen Yiyang independently developed the “AI Support Assistant.” By leveraging free open-source tools, she enhanced the efficiency of case material organization, providing actionable insights and practical examples for the institution's internal digital transformation.

UNHCR's spotlight on Chen Yiyang is primarily based on the following key achievements:
1. She has successfully implemented “AI + Humanitarianism”—applying AI and data analytics to refugee information services and global displacement trend research, delivering more efficient support to millions of persons;
2. This project encompasses diverse types and broad impact—simultaneously undertaking platform development, big data visualization, AI video production, employee fatigue surveys, and international conference planning, combining technical depth with humanistic care;
3. She possesses exceptional cross-cultural communication and teamwork skills—collaborating with colleagues from diverse nations in multilingual, multicultural settings to complete multilingual systems and global data analysis, demonstrating international communication capabilities;
4. She embodies the international perspective and social responsibility of SPEITers—choosing the UNHCR internship focused on global refugee issues, she integrates engineering technology with public affairs, demonstrating a “engineering + humanities” interdisciplinary commitment.
Diverse Practices
Beyond AI projects, Chen Yiyang also participated in data analysis and visualization for UNHCR's Global Displacement Trends, using Python to uncover patterns in data concerning refugees, internally displaced persons, and stateless individuals; assisted in producing the AI-generated annual review video for the Ombudsman and Mediator Office; Contributed to designing an employee burnout assessment questionnaire based on the Burnout Assessment Tool for the 2025 IOA conference; Hosted and supported 12 global online workshops—including Ubuntu Community Café and “How to Have a Difficult Conversation”—in Chinese, English, French, and Spanish, providing emotional support and dialogue spaces for staff navigating organizational change; Contributed to functional planning and page design for the NOMMO International Ombuds and Mediators Network member website.
She has consistently demonstrated strong engineering capabilities and exceptional cross-cultural communication skills across multiple dimensions, including platform development, data analysis, mental health, and organizational care.

From the SJTU campus to UNHCR, Chen Yiyang has demonstrated an engineer's social responsibility through coding in global public affairs. She will continue to deepen her work at the intersection of technology and sustainable development, ensuring that “Chinese wisdom” continues to shine on the international stage!
