On April 8, 2026, the 130th anniversary celebration of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was grandly held at the Huo Yingdong Sports Center on the Minhang Campus. All members of the SJTU community gathered for this grand occasion to revisit their original aspirations and embark on a new journey. Hamza BOUKILI, a young international faculty member of our institute, was invited to take the stage. As an important participant in the opening warm-up storytelling session, he shared his deep connection with SJTU, showcasing the excellence of our international faculty and embodying the openness, inclusiveness, and sense of mission of “Global SJTU.”
Hamza BOUKILI
As an outstanding representative of international faculty at our institute, Hamza BOUKILI is a “New Shanghainese” holding a Chinese permanent residence permit. He holds a PhD in applied mathematics and joined our institute in 2020 as a mathematics teacher. Deeply engaged in Sino-French educational integration, he is not only a dedicated educator but also a messenger of Sino-French cultural exchange and a pursuer of technological innovation, actively contributing to the institute’s mission of cultivating elite engineers.
In the field of teaching, Professor BOUKILI has achieved remarkable accomplishments: he was awarded the title of one of the “Top Ten ‘Kaiyuan’ Teachers” at SJTU, received the First Prize of the SJTU Teaching Achievement Award in 2024 and the Second Prize in 2025, and the course Linear Algebra and Bilinear Algebra, in which he participated as a lecturer, was recognized as a Shanghai first-class course. In 2021, he won the First Prize at the “Sino-French Smart Teaching · Teaching Innovation Forum and Competition.” He integrates AI algorithms and optimization techniques into teaching, combines his entrepreneurial experience with academic guidance, and balances knowledge transmission with intellectual inspiration. He is highly appreciated by both Chinese and international students, while also actively building bridges for cross-cultural communication and fostering friendship among students from different backgrounds.
At the 130th anniversary ceremony, Mr. BOUKILI deeply moved the audience with his heartfelt speech. He recalled that in 2016, he came to China for the first time as an exchange student, planting the seed of his connection with China and SJTU. In 2020, driven by his passion for China and dedication to education, he officially joined SJTU and became a “New Shanghainese.” Today, SJTU has truly become his home.
“The university continues to advance its ‘Global SJTU’ strategy. Here, the cultivation of international talents enables SJTU students to go global and become ambassadors of cultural exchange. At the same time, SJTU extends its innovative efforts to the global frontier, using open innovation platforms that connect the world to bring knowledge and resources to where they are most needed in this era.”
His words reflected both his deep affection for SJTU and the institute’s commitment to advancing internationalization through Sino-French cooperation.
Upon receiving a letter of appreciation from the university, Mr. BOUKILI felt deeply honored and touched. He remarked that he had originally intended simply to fulfill his duties as an ordinary teacher at SJTU, but the university’s broad platform has provided him with ample space to realize his aspirations in both education and research, allowing him to engage in technological innovation while dedicating himself to teaching. Coincidentally, this year marks the 10th anniversary of his first visit to China, and SJTU’s anniversary coincides with the season of his first encounter with the country. This meaningful connection has further strengthened his determination to remain at SJTU and continue contributing to Sino-French educational integration. “It is a great honor to represent internationalization and to belong to SJTU. In the future, I will continue to develop here and contribute my efforts.”
The SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology, as an international platform jointly established by SJTU and four top French engineering schools, has 40% of its full-time faculty from France. It has always been committed to promoting Sino-French educational integration and cultivating elite engineering talents. Leveraging SJTU’s strengths in engineering and France’s solid foundation in mathematics and science, the institute focuses on three major cutting-edge engineering fields, providing a broad development platform for both Chinese and international talents.
The growth and achievements of Mr. BOUKILI are a vivid reflection of the institute’s internationalization efforts and a strong testament to its faculty development. Here, there is not only an inclusive and diverse environment for growth, but also solid support for talent development and the realization of aspirations. With 130 years of excellence, SJTU stands at its prime; united in Sino-French collaboration, the spirit is passed on. With sincerity as an international teacher, Mr. BOUKILI has rooted himself at SJTU and dedicated himself to education, embodying the responsibility of an educator through professionalism and passion, and building bridges for Sino-French cultural exchange through action and perseverance. In the future, our institute will continue to leverage its international strengths, attract more outstanding talents like Mr. BOUKILI, deepen teaching and research, promote global integration, support the university’s “Global SJTU” strategy, and contribute to cultivating more globally competent elite engineers and advancing Sino-French cultural exchange and technological innovation cooperation, writing even more remarkable chapters ahead.
