Leader

At SPEIT, where multilingual instruction, an intensive curriculum, and interdisciplinary learning define the educational experience, Shan Yijia has always regarded academic excellence as the foundation of her personal growth. Faced with the challenges of bilingual Sino-French education and the rigorous engineering curriculum, she never pursued quick results. Instead, she gradually developed an effective learning strategy built upon systematic preparation before class, active participation during lectures, comprehensive review afterward, and timely resolution of learning difficulties.

This disciplined approach has enabled her to build a strong scientific foundation. She has earned scores above 95 in several courses and currently ranks second in her cohort.

Behind these outstanding academic achievements lies not only intellectual rigor but also a genuine commitment to helping others succeed. Believing that excellence becomes more meaningful when shared, Shan served for two consecutive years as a mentor in SPEIT's "XueBaTuan" Academic Support Program. She prepared and shared course notes, organized subject-specific tutoring sessions, and hosted experience-sharing workshops, benefiting nearly one hundred fellow students.

As the student representative for the Computer Science program, she also serves as an important bridge between students and faculty by communicating academic information, coordinating course-related issues, and organizing peer-learning activities. Beyond her own academic success, she is dedicated to fostering a collaborative learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.

Exploring the Frontiers of Innovation Through Research and Engineering Projects

PRP

While SPEIT's rigorous curriculum has provided Shan with a solid scientific foundation, it is research and engineering competitions that have taught her how to transform knowledge into practical solutions.

Throughout her undergraduate studies, she participated in several Participation in Research Program (PRP), independently undertaking model design and algorithm development. To overcome technical challenges, she spent countless hours in the laboratory testing, refining, and optimizing her programs, treating every setback as an opportunity to improve.

She later joined the X-Lance Laboratory, where she conducts research on speech enhancement. From reproducing existing models and optimizing algorithms to implementing them in real-world applications, this experience has gradually cultivated her research mindset and strengthened her engineering capabilities.

Committed to staying at the forefront of technological development, Shan also attended the Real-Time Internet Conference 2025 along with the Dialogue AI Forum, where discussions with leading researchers and industry experts broadened her understanding of emerging technologies and cutting-edge developments.

Engineering competitions have likewise served as an invaluable platform for applying and testing her knowledge. During her undergraduate years, Shan won 9 national awards, one municipal award, and two university-level awards. Whether programming competition robots, developing mathematical models, or collaborating within multidisciplinary teams, each experience has expanded her technical expertise and reinforced her determination to pursue a career in artificial intelligence and engineering technologies.

Beyond her academic studies and research activities, Shan Yijia regards service to the community as an essential responsibility. As a member of the Communist Party of China, she has distinguished herself through her dedication and active participation in student political affairs. She was recognized as an Outstanding Participant in the training program for probationary Party members organized by the SJTU Young Marxists School, where she also served as vice president of her cohort.

She currently serves as Commissioner for Publicity and Discipline of the Second Student Party Branch at SPEIT. In this role, she actively organizes political study sessions, Party branch meetings, and membership development activities, helping foster the values of responsibility, commitment, and service among student Party members.

Student leadership has also been a defining aspect of her university experience. As former President of the SPEIT Student Union, she coordinated more than ten major institute- and university-level events, including the Sino-French Cultural Festival, the International Campus Music Festival, the National French Public Speaking Competition "Excellence Cup" for high school and university students, and orientation events for incoming freshmen.

As General Coordinator of the SJTU Mathematical Modeling Training Camp, she also helped support more than 3,000 students and organized around ten training seminars involving multiple universities, creating an outstanding platform for learning and collaboration among mathematical modeling enthusiasts.

Today, Shan remains actively involved in several student organizations, including the Science and Technology Association of the SJTU Communist Youth League of China, the Student Sports Federation, and the SPEIT Career Development Association. She contributes to the organization of numerous university events, alumni engagement activities, and student support initiatives.

Thriving Through Diversity: Refusing to Be Defined by a Single Label

Sports

"I don't want to be defined by a single label."

This sentence perfectly captures Shan Yijia's philosophy. Beyond academics, research, and student leadership, she is equally passionate about athletics and the arts.

A member of both the university track and field team and the long-distance running team, she approaches athletic training with the same discipline that she applies to her studies. Her dedication has earned her 8 athletic medals. Among her achievements, she won the women's 400-meter championship at the SJTU Sports Games, finished second in the 200 meters, helped her team secure the silver medal in the 4×400-meter relay at the Shanghai University Games, and placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Shanghai Collegiate Athletics Championships. She also holds several performance records at SPEIT sports competitions.

For Shan, the running track is far more than a competitive arena—it is a place where perseverance, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence are cultivated.

She is also one of the university's most accomplished student emcees. Named one of the Top 10 Student Hosts at SJTU, she has served as master of ceremonies for numerous university events, including the inauguration ceremony of the 40th Student Sports Federation, freshman welcome ceremonies, and SPEIT graduation ceremonies. Her confidence, professionalism, and communication skills have earned widespread recognition from both faculty and students.

In addition, Shan has appeared in several promotional videos for both the University and SPEIT. Collectively, these videos have attracted more than 270,000 views across various online platforms, helping showcase the vitality and achievements of the SJTU student community.

A Message to Future Students

"Existence precedes essence."

Before trying to determine who you will become, begin by exploring. The person you ultimately become is shaped by the choices you make and the actions you take today.

University is never a journey toward a single predetermined answer. Rather, it is a vast space for exploration—where you are free to experiment, hesitate, change direction, and grow at your own pace. There is no need to define yourself too early or to doubt your potential simply because the future remains uncertain.

Take a course that truly interests you. Challenge yourself in a competition. Join a student organization. Volunteer for a cause you care about. Most importantly, pay attention to the passions that quietly emerge in your everyday experiences.

The answers rarely appear at the beginning of the journey. They gradually reveal themselves through commitment, perseverance, and reflection.

May we all preserve our enthusiasm, embrace new horizons with confidence, and, each in our own way, become free-spirited explorers who move forward with passion, always carried by the wind.

The many honors Shan Yijia has received represent only one chapter of her story. Her journey of exploration has only just begun.

As countless opportunities lie ahead, we wish her continued success as she pursues excellence with the same openness, intellectual rigor, and determination. Guided by the energy of youth, may she continue to embody the values of responsibility, commitment, and innovation that define SPEIT students and inspire future generations of aspiring engineers.
