Recently, the final of the 11th Young Teachers Teaching Competition of Shanghai Jiao Tong University took place. Following preliminary selections organized by each school and department, 49 young teachers from 28 instituts were selected to compete in teaching proficiency. After intense competition in the final round, Professor Qiu Siqi from the Information Engineering programme at SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology won the Third Prize in the Applied Natural Sciences Group.

The competition is divided into five categories: Humanities, Social Sciences, Ideological & Political Theory Courses, Basic Natural Sciences & Medical Sciences, and Applied Natural Sciences. The partiipants are evaluated on three capabilities : lesson design, teaching demonstration, and teaching reflection.

Professor Qiu Siqi presented the course Information Theory and Coding Principles in the competition. As one of the core courses for information engineering major, it has two main parts : basic information theories and applied coding technologies, corresponding respectively to “quantitative analysis of information” and “optimization of communication transmission”.

The theoretical part train students to quantitatively describe and analyse information and uncertainty, with emphasis on concepts such as information entropy of various information sources and channel capacity. It is centred on the workflow of digital communication, the coding technology module covers lossless source coding, rate-distortion source coding, channel error-correcting coding, encryption coding and other key topics.

Professor Qiu Siqi mainly teaches the “Information Theory and Coding Principles”, the “C Programming and Algorithm Analysis”, and the “Advanced Electronics”. She has continuously optimized the content of her competition entry course “Information Theory and Coding Principles” throughout her teaching practice. In 2025, she led a university-level undergraduate curriculum development project empowered by artificial intelligence (AI+). In 2026, she took charge of a university-level research project on practical AI+HI teaching scenarios.

Teacher Profile

Qiu Siqi

Her main research focuses on mathematical modeling and machine learning algorithm development for intelligent scheduling and predictive maintenance in smart factories. She currently serves as a member of the Technical Committee on System Reliability Engineering of the Chinese Systems Engineering Society; Director of the Reliability Branch of the chinese Operations Research Society ; Director of the Reliability Engineering Branch of the chinese Society for Probability and Statistics; Young Committee Member of the Reliability Engineering Branch of the chinese Society of Aeronautics; and Young Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Engineering Management. She has presided over more than ten national and provincial/ministerial research projects, including the General Program of the chinese National Natural Science Foundation, sub-projects of National Science and Technology Major Projects, and special research tasks under the Major Project for Marine Engines. She also has been selected into the Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program.

Teaching competitions serve not only as a stage for young teachers to demonstrate their talents, but also as an important opportunity for the college to advance faculty development. The SPEIT attaches great importance to teachers’ pedagogical advancement and continuously improves the mentoring mechanism of “senior faculty guiding junior colleagues”. It builds an effective platform for young teachers to showcase teaching practices, exchange ideas and grow together. The Institute also thoroughly integrates the improvement of teaching competence with the cultivation of professional ethics among faculty members. It actively encourages young teachers to accumulate experience, hone their skills and consolidate foundations in routine teaching. In this way, the professional growth of individual teachers can progress alongside the improvement of the Institute’s teaching quality, steadily injecting internal momentum into the high-quality development of elite engineering education within the college.
